After much waiting, the movie, Remarkably Bright Creatures, has finally dropped on Netflix on May 8, 2026. For the uninitiated, it is based on the 2022 novel of the same name by Shelby Van Pelt. The movie follows ‘Tova’, portrayed by Sally Field, who lives a quiet and isolated life in a small Pacific Northwest town. She is completely alone, with her teenage son having died mysteriously decades ago, and the recent death of her husband.
However, things start to change when a drifter named ‘Cameron’ (Lewis Pullman) comes to her town. After the death of his mother, he comes to the town believing that he might find his biological father, whom he had never known, might be there. With both ‘Cameron’ and ‘Tova’ looking for love and family, the two begin to grow closer. However, it is the ending of Remarkably Bright Creatures that delivers a shocking revelation that changes their lives forever.

How does Remarkably Bright Creatures come to an end?
By the time that the film reaches its final stage, we see that ‘Cameron’ is truly upset because all the leads that he had on his father’s identity have come to a dead end. As his frustration manifests into anger, he throws his father’s class ring into the eel tank one night at the aquarium. Meanwhile, ‘Marcellus’ had already deduced that it was none other than the class ring which held the key to everything. Also, realising that ‘Tova’ will come looking for him if he escapes his tank, he decides to break out, grabs the rings and heads straight to the aquarium’s back door.
‘Marcellus’s’ deduction comes true as ‘Tova’ follows the wet streak leading away from his tank. She soon finds the octopus next to the back door, looking out at the sea. Understanding that ‘Marcellus’ wants his freedom and to return to the ocean, especially since he is in the later years of his life, ‘Tova’ decides to set him free. She tearfully bids him goodbye with ‘Marcellus’ replying, “Goodbye, my friend.” However, before long, ‘Tova’ finds the ring that ‘Marcellus’ has left behind, and, upon seeing the engraving, she begins crying after realising the true identity of ‘Cameron’s’ father.
Who is ‘Cameron’s’ father in Remarkably Bright Creatures?
Later that night, when ‘Cameron’ finds ‘Tova’ sitting by herself at the dock, he tells him to join her as she has something to tell him. She shockingly reveals, “My son’s name was Eric Ernat Lingram Sullivan. It’s his ring.” Ultimately ‘Cameron’ realises that ‘Tova’ was actually his grandmother this entire time. The next day, ‘Cameron’ goes into ‘Eric’s’ old bedroom to clean it as he intends to move into it. This is when he comes across a few creaky, loose floorboards under the rug. When he lifts the wooden plans, he finds a box which he opens together with ‘Tova.’
Inside this box, the duo find old pictures of ‘Eric’ with ‘Cameron’s’ mom from when they were still teens. They also find a list of boy names, among which ‘Cameron’ was circled. ‘Tova’ tells ‘Cameron’ that her son named him, also coming to the realisation that the reason ‘Eric’s’ mood often changed in the final days before his death was because he was afraid that he got a girl pregnant.
What happens to ‘Tova’ at the end of the film?
‘Tova’ undergoes one of the biggest transformations by the time Remarkably Bright Creatures reaches its end. While she kept herself locked away and lived an isolated life at the start of the film, later, with the help of both ‘Marcellus’ and ‘Cameron’, she began to open up more and embrace the world again. The final scene of the movie is especially noteworthy as we see ‘Tova’ and ‘Cameron’ having a cookout at their house, in the company of their friends. This showcases how ‘Tova’ is finally letting people back into her life after spending a long time being consumed by the deaths of her son and husband.
Does ‘Marcellus’ die at the end of Remarkably Bright Creatures?
One question that lingers in viewers’ minds is whether ‘Marcellus’ dies at the end of the movie. Audiences had already been made aware from the start through both the aquarium’s marine biologist and from ‘Marcellus’ inner dialogue that he was close to the end of his lifespan. Well, instead of showing him dying, in his final scene, all we see is ‘Marcellus’ happily swimming through the ocean, after finding freedom.
After making his way to the seafloor, ‘Marcellus’ finds himself a nice nook under a coral overhang. Sliding his way inside it, he soon curls up, looking all happy and free. He says that even though the chances are that he will die soon, he is pretty happy to be able to spend his final days in the open sea while feeling its freshness and liveliness.
